Bucharest: A double by Colombian striker Radamel Falcao inspired Atletico Madrid to a 3-0 win over fellow Spaniards Athletic Bilbao here on Wednesday and their second Europa League trophy in three seasons.

Falcao, who also became the first player to win successive Europa League/UEFA Cups with different sides having scored the winning goal for Porto last term, scored a brilliant first-half double to take his tally for this season’s competition to 12.

Brazilian attacking midfielder Diego, who missed the 2009 final for Werder Bremen against winners Shakhtar Donetsk because he was suspended, added a third late in the second-half to give Argentinian coach Diego Simeone a trophy just months after he took over the hot seat.

Atletico’s victory also saw them break Barcelona’s record of successive wins in European competition as they recorded their 12th to break the record of 11 set in the 2002/03 Champions League campaign.

London: London should not be turned into a "city under siege" by the heavy security measures being put in place for the Olympics, London organising chief Sebastian Coe said on Wednesday.

Coe spoke as the British military embarked on operations to test Olympic security, including flights over London by fighter jets and helicopters. Visitors to the Olympic Park encountered lengthy delays at times on Wednesday as they went through airport-style security checks.

"We want to make sure these games are safe and secure, but at the same time we are not presenting a vision of London that is a city under siege," Coe said inside Olympic Stadium.

About 75,000 spectators are expected at Olympic Park on Saturday for five test events ahead of the July 27 to August 12 games.

Sharjah Amjad Javed is a perfect match winner. If he settles down quickly during the course of his innings then it will be a nightmare for all bowlers and on his day, he can wreck any team as a bowler too.

In the ongoing Bukhatir League, Javed produced an allround performance for Fly Emirates and it resulted in the reputed and formidable Eurocon Alubond team crash to a 129-run defeat at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. He wrecked Eurocon with a spell off 5 for 39 and hit 76 runs.

Last week, Javed had won the best batsman of the year award in division two during the Shyam Bhatia annual awards for outstanding performers in UAE cricket.

Speaking to Gulf News, Javed, who is one of UAE national team’s consistent performers, said: “It’s always nice to produce good performance against formidable teams like Eurocon. My five wicket spell is the result of a slight change in my action made by UAE’s new coach Aaqib Javed. He has been motivating me in the nets and that is why I could produce a five wicket spell on a Sharjah wicket which does not help a pacer.”

New Delhi: Kevin Pietersen blasted a whirlwind 103 not out to help Delhi Daredevils score a superb five-wicket victory over Deccan Chargers on Thursday and take the top spot in the points table of the Indian Premier League.

The England batsman smashed nine sixes and six fours off 64 balls in his maiden Twenty20 century as Delhi scored 162-5 in 19.1 overs after restricting Deccan to 157-8 at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground.

Deccan had earlier looked set for a huge total before Shahbaz Nadeem (3-16) and Morne Morkel (3-23) pegged them back with timely strikes.

Parthiv Patel (45) and Shikhar Dhawan (44) were the main scorers for Deccan. Delhi now have four wins from five games while Deccan have lost all four of their games.

Pietersen struck three consecutive sixes off all-rounder Jean-Paul Duminy in the 13th over of the innings to wrest command for his team.

Delhi were struggling at 23-3 at one stage with captain Virender Sehwag and Mahela Jaywardene back in the pavilion, but Pietersen batted himself in before unleashing the barrage of strokes. He smashed the winning shot – a six off Ankit Sharma – to also get to a well-deserved century.

"This is absolutely amazing, the crowds cheering for the teams here," Pietersen said. "I would love to have more English cricketers playing here, but I am enjoying playing in India."

Good wicket

The man of the match added: "It is amazing, a special feeling to score a century in T20 cricket. This is my first in this format, so it has to be my favourite.

"It is good to get a century in T20 cricket. It was a good wicket to bat on and also good for the pacers who bent their back, not much for the spinners. In Twenty20 you need entertaining wickets.

"I played as per the situation. Once you get yourself in there, you can get the boundaries. I was in good form against Sri Lanka and it is all about backing yourself in the field."

The Daredevils were reeling at 65 for four but Pietersen’s heroics helped bail them out.

"When you lose wickets, you slow down and Ross’s (Taylor) wicket put pressure on me. They played good cricket," he said.

The South African-born batsman also praised left-arm spinner Shabaz Nadeem for yet another brilliant performance. Nadeem put the brakes on the Chargers onslaught by removing Shikhar Dhawan and Parthiv Patel and ended the match with figures of three for 16.

First-ball dismissal

"He (Nadeem) bowled a good spell in the last match, taking three for nine against Mumbai. He was fantastic today. He changes his angle and is a clever bowler. There were talks of who could be the spinner of IPL V and he is turning out to be a superstar," he said.

Nadeem, who plays for the eastern state of Jharkhand in Indian domestic tournaments, had a first-ball lbw dismissal of opener Dhawan as the batsman went for a reverse-sweep.

Nadeem also took the key wickets of Patel and Duminy to finish with 3-16, changing the course of the innings after Deccan were cruising along at 81-1 in nine overs.

Patel and Dhawan got runs, but the batsmen to follow succumbed cheaply as Morkel, who had dismissed captain Kumar Sangakkara early in the innings, finished with a haul of 3-23.

Look around and note who’s playing in central defense for the Champions League semifinalists.

Barcelona? Gerard Pique, who is not having a good season, Carles Puyol, who is 34, and Javier Mascherano, who is 5′ 9 and, until recently, a midfielder.

Real Madrid? Pepe, OK, but then there’s Sergio Ramos, a recycled right back and Ricardo Carvalho, 34 next month and often injured.

Bayern? Holger Badstuber, Jerome Boateng, another recycled fullback, and Daniel Van Buyten, another sprightly 34 year old.

Chelsea? David Luiz, who seemingly divides opinion like few others, Gary Cahill, who was playing for Bolton until December and John Terry, who needs no introduction when it comes to generating conflicting emotions.

How many of the above can be described as "outstanding"? How many are as good at what they do as their teammates who play up front?

Maybe it’s a cyclical thing, but you get the impression that there is a dearth of absolute quality at center back. Poke around the rest of Europe. There’s Thiago Silva, Vincent Kompany, Nemanja Vidic (but he’s been out for most of the season) and the aforementioned Pique and Pepe. Mats Hummels and Neven Subotic might be in the next tier along with Adil Rami, Thomas Vermaelen, Giorgio Chiellini and perhaps a few others.

But there’s not much in the way of depth. Manchester United are likely to win the Premier League with Rio Ferdinand, whom everyone was writing off along with his bad back at the start of the season and Jonny Evans, a career sub.

It’s not a knock on any of these players. Rather, we either celebrate and appreciate central defenders less than we used to or the current crop simply isn’t that good (with the obvious exceptions, of course).

Part of it may be that central defenders abdicated playmaking duties a long time ago. Now they’re mostly defensive specialists whose attacking contribution is usually limited to set pieces. The old Franz Beckenbauer striding out of the defense trope is truly obsolete. In a perfect world, we’d judge these guys only on their ability to defend but, in fact, the clunkier they look on the ball, the less regard we have for them.

The reason why few teams build from central defense by the way is purely tactical. Most teams have a deep-lying midfielder deputized to build play, so there is little need (or space) for a central defender to step up. If anything it’s fullbacks who now participate far more in the buildup — and, not coincidentally, on most teams they’re the ones who get the most touches — not least because in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 there is space for them to run into and create a man advantage.

There’s another tactical explanation. Nobody man-marks anymore, everything is done zonally. And while man-marking became obsolete more than a decade ago, the center backs in those days were all — more or less — schooled in the art of individual marking. Today, players learn to defend zonally which undoubtedly raises your tactical acumen but, at the same time, does little to develop your defensive skill set.

And a lot of it is simply down to talent. You see more and more older center halves sticking around and getting playing time despite declining skills simply because they’re better than what’s coming through pipeline. And part of it may have to do with the fact that clubs once sought to develop outstanding athletes into center backs but now prefer to turn them — where possible — into fullbacks or midfielders.

As a result, clubs seem to value central defenders less than they once did, at least relative to fullbacks and defensive midfielders. Certainly, spending patterns suggest that you’re a lot more likely to spend big on wide areas or midfield than you are on an old school shutdown center half.

Whatever the case, this maybe the Golden Era of prolific front men (and it’s not just Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but also Mario Gomez, Robin Van Persie, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Zlatan Ibrahimovic). But when it comes to central defenders, it’s pretty slim pickings all around.

Dubai: Emirati driver Haytham Sultan Al Ali saved his best for the last in his first season of the inaugural UAE single-seater series, taking third overall in the Formula Gulf Championship. It was a fantastic finish for the Umm Al Quwain-based driver right at the end of the day where he managed to steer his way past Dubai-based Spanish driver Nicolas Canal to take his hard-fought podium position.

The podium finish didn’t come easy for the rookie as he had to battle hard in race one, where he finished a disappointing fifth. However patience paid off and it was in the very last race during the last few laps that Al Ali managed to dig deep to take the final trophy of the day, and secured his third place overall.

The Emirati is a relative newcomer to car racing having graduated from karting. He has gained enormous experience and race pace during every race and is full of praise for the new single-seater driver development programme set up by GulfSport Racing, a Dubai-based company with over 30 years of regional motorsport expertise under their belt.

Dubai: Long-shot Esentepe ran a cracker under Pat Dobbs to win a thrilling renewal of the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket yesterday.

Dobbs, a regular rider in the UAE, had the three-year-old filly handy throughout the seven furlong contest before taking up the lead in the closing stages and holding on well to score by a neck from top-weight Nayarra, with Lily’s Angel finishing strongly to take third, a half-a-length further back.

Assistant trainer Richard Hannon-Junior said of the winner: "I wasn’t expecting that to be fair but she’s a good filly. She isn’t in the Guineas but I put her in the Musidora at York and we’ll just take her home. There are no plans at this stage."

Richard Fahey was thrilled with Lily’s Angel effort under a strong Paul Hannagan ride and commented: "She’s run a cracker. She’s just got stuck out on a limb a bit down the middle of the track but Paul was pleased with her and she’s come home very well.
